Nordkop Mountain Sunset Hike

Harriman State Park,
Rockland Co.
New York

Hiking Trails:
Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail: Yellow blaze

Total Time: 0:45 hour
Estimated Distance: 1.2 Miles

Pros: Good short hike with a good climb and good views
Cons: Lots of trash, noise from highway

After many days of rain, this was a beautiful day, and I took the opportunity to do a quick hike on my way home from work. I parked in downtown Suffern on Lafayette Ave, right near Route 202, and took Route 59 north underneath the wide overpass to the Suffern-Bear Mountain Trail trailhead. I climbed up the steep route to the first view, and then continued to the second view. I then turned around and went down, though kept the route on the rocky area directly south of the trail, back down to the road and back to the car.

  1. Okay I think I just realized which hike I want to do tomorrow. I do not know what it's called. Perhaps you can help me out. I see it out of my right hand side when you're taking the access road from West Point on to the Palisades South. It has a locked gate precluding vehicles from it. True story. About four years ago when I had a Jeep Wrangler is when I first noticed it as I'm driving on to the Palisades from West Point. So I pulled onto the shoulder, backed up and took my Jeep Wrangler (in low four) AROUND the locked gate and drove my Wrangler along the trail for probably three miles into the woods. The trail is beautiful breathtaking. It runs right along the edge of a steep Cliff drop off. Which again I drove right on the edge with my Wrangler (quite stupid.) And it finally ends by a magnificent waterfall.
BTW, the trail just ends by the waterfall. There's no cold de sac or place to do a k-turn with a car. So it was very tricky turning my Jeep around to drive out of there.
I was younger and even more immature (hey, it was 4 yrs. ago!)
Lesson: don't be a stupid bad boy. Be a good yeshiva boy like Hesh.
(yes. scouts honor. That really is a true story)

  2. That's the Popolopen Gorge Trail, which starts at the access road of Route 9W and the Palisades Parkway. It's blazed red. Don't know how you got a jeep into there as it's quite narrow and steep. There is a waterfall at the bottom of the Gorge there.
